I dunno if this wimp is American, but I'd be fine with taking this man's U.S. citizenship and giving it to one worthy illegal alien.

Let's not forget this second man who did effectively nothing to help the woman. He's as much of a namby-pamby, just not quite as cowardly.
To play devil's advocate, maybe the good-for-nothing milksop isn't in a relationship with the woman. Heck, maybe they had just met and were having a friendly conversation about backpacking at that laundromat or bank or whatever it was.
But this isn't New York City, where the DA will charge you with murder when you save a train-full of people from violent lunatics. When a lady is assaulted, you defend her with your life, for the sake of her honor and yours!
