Remember in 2023, when Mercedes-Benz announced it would lock 60 extra horsepower behind a $90/month subscription service?

Well, according to the UK's Auto Express, Volkswagen just decided to join the horsepower-subscription wars with its electric offering.

While the Volkswagen ID.3 Pro and Pro S are listed on the configurator as producing 201bhp, buyers must pay a subscription fee to reach the car's full potential of 228bhp.

This subscription currently stands at £16.50 [$22.25] per month.

That's cheaper than Mercedes-Benz, but also a lot less horsepower too.

27 horsepower!

For an upfront fee of $875, buyers can get the extra 27 horsepower for life without the subscription.

Gee, thanks!

Here's a look at the car:

…it remains to be seen what would happen if an owner were to hack their car - also known as ‘jailbreaking' - in order to manually switch on the extra power for free.

That should be interesting!
