I'm sorry, did you think this was satire?

Nope.

Jeevun Sandher (a very English name, to be sure) is a member of parliament. He is at odds with the Leicestershire County Council because the council (which recently came under the control of the Reform Party, like many other county councils) decided to display the Union Jack and flag of St. George as a public display of patriotism.

Standing in the town of Loughborough, Sandher boldly declared that painting the national flag on roundabouts is "weird."

Worse, still, he said, was that the public display continued onto public streetlights.

Here I am with flags flying from almost every single lamppost.

I'm proud of our flag, but I do understand why others feel that it's about excluding people. Why others feel that it's about saying who belongs here and who doesn't.

Dear reader, did you know that national flags include some people in said nation while excluding all others?

Just imagine it: An entire street in England lined with flags that signal to the public where their national love, affections, and affiliations should lie.

My favorite part of Sandher's video is how he defines what it means to be British.

Did you catch it?

Standing together, not standing apart. That's what being British is about. Unity, decency, determination, having a pint, a cuppa tea, supporting the English football team - and sometimes they win.

Is that what constitutes a Brit?

A long list of stereotypical activities centered around a generic promise to be nice?
