This is on par with being arrested because you called a man who attacked you a "f*ggot."
Except this is happening in the United States of America.
Alright, just reading this headline is bad enough. You don't get to stab people for saying a word you don't like. Not even if it's THE bad word no one is allowed to say.
But it's much worse than that.
You see, this white man called the black man who stabbed him the "N word" AFTER he had already been stabbed.
I'm not even sure how this defense works, does the lawyer say, "My client just knew the man he was stabbing was racist, and he proved it because the man said a mean word after he was stabbed."?
And then the jury in Portland says, "That's a good point. He may have stabbed the man, but you should never use that word. He's free to go!"?
That's pretty close to what happened.
A black man was acquitted of stabbing a white man in Oregon after he claimed the attack was self-defense because the victim called him a racial slur.
Yes, he stabbed a man to defend himself against a word the man was GOING to say.
Never mind that the white man would have said nothing at all if he hadn't been stabbed. He had the naughty word in the deep recesses of his vocabulary so he deserved the stabbing, I guess.
Security cameras, with no audio, captured Edwards, with a fixed-blade knife in hand, approaching Howard as he sat on a beach [SIC].
Howard immediately jumped up and pushed Edwards, then the two scuffled until Edwards stabbed Howard in the shoulder.
Edwards defense attorney Daniel Small reportedly told the jury that his client was approaching Howard to see if he would trade his knife for cigarettes.
'What other than racism could explain why Mr. Howard perceived hatred, animosity and aggression from a complete stranger,' Small said.
The story we're supposed to believe, and the jury DID believe, is that the black man approached a white dude on a bench, fixed blade knife in hand, and asked to trade the knife for cigarettes.
Not the more obvious explanation of a known criminal homeless man wielding a knife mugging a man.
And the white man reacted in an aggressive manner because he's a racist. Not because he was being threatened with a knife. And he proved his racism by hurling a slur in anger after he was stabbed in the shoulder.
Moments later, body camera footage from security officers captured Howard shouting a racist slur at Edwards after he had been stabbed.
It is unclear if there is any evidence to suggest that Howard used the slur before he was stabbed.
Prosecutor Katherine Williams told the jury it did not matter what the victim said after he was stabbed.
'The defendant is not scared for his life. He didn't retreat, he sauntered up - and he sauntered away after he stabbed someone. The defendant created the situation,' Williams said.
He sauntered up, stabbed a dude, then sauntered away.
Clearly the victim in this case.
It sounds like one of the countless deranged attacks by homeless vagrants and crazy people that happens in the United States every single day.
Who knew that they're just stabbing people because they have a secret racism detector?
