The announcement around the hats also plugged the DPD's recruitment team. The department faces the task of having at least 4,000 officers by 2029, the minimum amount mandated by Proposition U, a city charter amendment passed last year. As of June, 3,215 officers were employed, the DPD said.
In June, the city also allowed recruits to join without a college degree.
In addition, you can now have tats and beards.
The DPD also began allowing officers to show their tattoos at work and have groomed, natural beards last year, which then-police Chief Eddie García described as a move to build morale and help recruitment and retention.
