This week, an app for women called "Tea" become the #1 downloaded app on the Apple App Store.

What a time to be alive.

The Tea app lets women discuss men they've dated to warn other women to stay away (I can't possibly see how this might go wrong). The program has been billed as a "women's safety dating app," but men have complained that pictures posted of them without consent may violate Apple's terms of service.

Unfortunately for the women, the app also required them to give the developer a picture of their ID and location details for verification. Today, someone hacked it and put nearly 60 gigabytes of private data on 4chan.

I blurred the faces there to respect the privacy of the women who gave detailed private data to a two-bit software company so they could rate their exes.

CNET has more on the silver lining, however:

According to Tea's preliminary findings, the breach allowed access to approximately 72,000 images, broken down into two groups: 13,000 images of selfies and photo identification that people had submitted during account verification and 59,000 images that were publicly viewable in the app from posts, comments and direct messages.

Those images had been in a 'legacy data system' that contained information from more than two years ago, the company said in statement. 'At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that current or additional user data was affected.'

Great, so women only had their name, age, weight, address, location data, and photos leaked if they had signed up for the app in 2023. That's so much better? 🙄

People had thoughts about the whole thing.

(Studies have shown that 80% of women on casual hookup apps in a given area routinely share men they rate in the top 20%, while the "bottom" 80% of men compete for the remaining 20% of women. This means the most attractive men often are able to sleep with a rotating harem of women while giving women the illusion of exclusivity.)

And you thought the dating world couldn't get any more chaotic!
