On Saturday evening, a shooter came onto the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
These are the latest updates as of Sunday morning from CNN:
A person of interest is in custody in connection with yesterday's shooting at Brown University, officials said this morning. The shooting, which happened during a final exam review session at the private Ivy League university, left two students dead and nine others injured.
Yes, the shooter came during a weekend evening, when there weren't any classes happening, and opened fire in a single classroom where students were meeting to review for finals.
Make of that what you will.
Tragically, the shooter was able to kill 2 people and injure nine more before fleeing the scene and disappearing.
Even now, we aren't sure that we have a suspect in custody.
However, the story online seems to be the incompetent response of Brown University.
For hours, there were no descriptions of the suspect, no photos, no video, nothing at all. Then you got this video:
Here's the president of Brown getting raked over the coals for talking to the press but knowing absolutely nothing:
And the police didn't fare much better:
It's definitely not a good look for the university that six hours elapsed and they had no idea why the students were on campus, had no visuals so the public could be on the outlook for the shooter, or any news regarding the victims.
Nothing about this incident seemed normal:
As of this morning, a person of interest was detained at a local hotel where CNN journalists just happened to be staying.
CNN witnessed heavy police activity early Sunday morning at a hotel near the Providence airport, where a person of interest was detained in Saturday's shooting at Brown University, according to a law enforcement official in Rhode Island.
CNN witnessed at least 20 police officers, US marshals, and FBI agents inside the hotel and entering a room.
A CNN photojournalist was among the hotel guests who were woken up just before 4 a.m., as police were heard banging on a hotel room door, saying, 'Open up.'
We'll keep our eyes out if there's any change in the status of this from a person of interest to a suspect.
Our prayers go out to those close to the students hurt and killed.
